It's a 1935-ish Ford Eight Popular [Y], a poverty spec option launched as Britain's first car sold for under £100. DVT 788 plate comes up as a January 1937 issue, and it was available until August 1937.

Yes! I believe that is his car. It looks large in that shot. In many scenes of the film it looked smaller and cozier. Really cute probably 1940s vehicle.
