Indeed, my father also spotted a "BAJ" plate.

Two days ago I saw a US-sized new style CD plate on a Ford Taurus.

New online tool for Belgian plates:

http://www.mobilit.fgov.be/WebdivPub/wmvpstv1

Here you can find the date a plate was registered ("active since") or when it was scrapped.

(under "kentekennummer" , no spaces or - )

Of course of limited use here since the plates are tied to the owner, not one vehicle.

For my plate:
"De kentekenplaat is actief en heeft als inschrijvingsdatum 10-10-2003"
Nice, 9 years exactly  (but the car is from January 2003)

I dig this old thread for a recent change in the plates:
Now custom plates do not have to begin by a "9-".
You can chose what you want, up to 8 characters. Letters & numbers must be separated from each other by a dash, which also counts in the number of characters (in this way current plates count as 9 characters: you can't make a custom plate that looks like one from a regular series).
It will still cost 1000 €.
Those who already bought a "9-" custom plate can drop the "9-" for 30 €.
Numbers-only plates are still forbidden (royal plates), except for old-timers from before 1954.
Of course they will restrict the words that you can put on these (racist, political, insulting, ...)

And about royal plates, a fun fact:
http://www.7sur7.be/7s7/fr/1502/Belgique/article/detail/1823806/2014/03/20/Le-Palais-voit-defiler-les-PV-adresses-au-Roi.dhtml
For those who do not understand French, the king was getting a lot of fines, mostly speeding tickets. And all from France.
It appears that there was a bug in the French system for the new plates starting by "1-"... so they dropped all what was after the 1 (and "1" is the king's plate).
I wonder how they didn't notice that sooner

French administration people worship their computers. I think these are Computers, for them. One guy of the State employment agency said me one day: "as a human, I cannot question what the computer says" :heink:
Fortunately we were talking about giving me some extra money, that time...

When you have admitted that administration computers cannot bug, in France, you understand there is no reason to check if there is any trouble :joce:

I mean from our side: why they didn't warn France sooner that they were sending the fines to the wrong person.

LOL, I always thought that were the Italians the worst to make license plates (although I would really like to see a comeback of our iconic old black plates), but looks like that we have a new winner here!

But why sticking to plain red colour for the letter fonts?

People who do not check the right plate size on the form
(three shapes are available)

Why red? Because they were like that before, there is no reason to have the same black & white in all countries. See in USA, each state has its plate color, why not have differences in Europe too ?
(they made the red darker, though)

Since today almost limitless vanity plates in Belgium. Long lines of people waiting to spent 1000 euro on IIIIII for example.

http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo124/marxbrosfan/KG/vanity.jpg

"9" prefix no longer required, only restriction is 8 characters maximum, and it has to contain one letter... Should be interesting.

a plate mixing O and Q would be a good deception as they are not very distinguishable in the font they use.
You can't really mix letters and numbers as dashes have to separate them. No way to make the smart move of mixing randomly O and 0 or I and 1

Dashes can also be used to separate "groups of letters and groups of numbers", so that's going to be confusing.
Other good rules: "no duplicate" when it gets stolen (and that's not unlikely), either another 1000 euro or back to a normal combination for 30 euro.
Also they can recall insulting combinations should they receive a complaint, again no money back. But you can make the reservation on your own responsibility for 1000 euro.

Indeed...
O-0-O-O
0-O-O-0
etc.

I guess all the plates with 1 or 2 letters will very quickly be sold.

The letter "O" will no longer be used in normal series according to someone at DIV, so only issued Nov 2010 - March 2014.
I always thought that was a mistake, looks exactly like a Q even at short distance.

(slabate @autoforum.be)

The font isn't very good anyway, they could make the queue of the Q going inside the round.
Like in the FE-Schrift, the font used for German plates made especially to be readable and to avoid possibility of changing a letter in another...

Funny to see the "P" plate on a car that doesn't seem to be worth much more than the price of the plate
For future resale?

I don't see how it's possible to transfer to another owner. I'm sure that's the idea for some people, make money out of it.
The same rules apply AFAIK, only a transfer parent to child.

Or get rid of it just at the right time for someone to buy it again? (i.e. free it in exchange of money)
