I learned driving in the Fahrschule (driving school) with a red VW Golf II Diesel with 55 hp. When learning how to drive away on a hill, I managed to kill the engine twice, then drive away with lots of wheelspin. After that I was successful with this exercise. 
Theoretical exam is taken in Germany in the driving school, but with an external licensed auditor. The practical exam usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes and happens with the driving school's car you have been learning on - the red Golf, here.
After passing the exam, I drove around from time to time with Dad's Alfa Romeo Alfa 75 1.8 i.e. My first own car was a 1987 3-door white VW Golf II "Bistro" with 70 hp petrol engine and sunroof, followed by a 1983 VW Passat station wagon with 90 hp petrol engine and a pale blue metallic colour. Had it had a roof rails, it would have passed as surfer vehicle.
From next year on, I will have a shopping basket on wheels, a 54 hp Fiat Seicento. Enough car for a single person not planning to drive long distances with it and living 5 minutes by bike from my employer.
