The first vehicle I drove on the road was a 1962 GMC 1 ton wrecker, 6 cylinder, 4 speed, with a Volkswagen Beetle on the hook, in 4 inches of fresh snow in Syracuse New York, I was 12/13 at the time and we were way out in the country. I drove it 25 miles with the trucks owner (Charley) riding shotgun. He taught me a lot about driving wreckers. Charley did all the towing for the local Chevron gas station near our house. At the age of 16 I took my driving test in my Dads 1968 Chrysler Newport, aced it, but in all fairness, Id already been driving on the road in my Moms Maverick for about a year. I had to sneak the Maverick into the teachers parking lot at my High School because freshmen didnt have parking privileges in the student parking lot. In drivers Ed (required by law) I used to take the VW Beetle and operate the dual pedals in the car for the girls, which made me very popular. The rest of the Drivers Ed car were automatics...
