Hyundai Sonata

When the Sonata started sales in the US for 1989, they built a plant in Quebec, as they expected sales to boom. So 1989 Sonatas were built in South Korea. The plant opened in 1990, and about 2/3 of 1990 Sonata sales were made there, the rest in Korea. For 1991 most were made in Quebec, and by 1992-93 they were all Quebec cars. Sales were slow, so they closed the plant in Quebec down in 1994. The new generation was made in South Korea.

From 1994-2004, Sonatas were South Korea-made.

In June 2005, Hyundai opened it's new plant in Alabama to produce the new 2006 NF models. Hyundai does not break down domestic/import sales, but I found an article from June 2015 that stated that Hyundai had built 1.86 million Sonatas at the Alabama plant for US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam sales. This number is a little more than the number of Sonatas sold in the US for this time period, so it appears that all regular models were built in Alabama.

The Hybrid model introduced in 2011 is built in South Korea.
