How many of us collect scale model cars and dioramas in general?
Published 08/07/2008 @ 22:42:35, By ingo
As a school-boy I've collected the 1:87-scale WIKING-models. A lot of them I've bought on flea-markets and at collector's store. I still have nine plastic-boards full with them (ca.400), but actually I haven't found a place to hang them.
In the early 90ies my interest in them was going back. They got more and more expensive and I've spend my money and time in my first real car (K 70, for sure  ) and the work in the K 70-enthusiasts-club.

I'm collectiing heavily K 70-literature - but strictly no toy-K 70ies. May sound strange, but I've seen, that the collections of my friends are very big, so my chance is not good to reach them. So I've decided to be concentrated just on the literature. If I find sometimes a K 70-scale model for a good price, I buy it and give to my friends for the same price.

I own only two K 70-scale-models, a red 1:87 WIKING (I got from a neighbour, when I was 3 years old) and a greenmtallic 1:66 Majorette with Sterckeman-camping-trailer, which I got as a 5-year-old boy.

My other toy-cars of my childhood, mainly SIKU, Majorette, some Matchbox, Corgi and others, too, are still existing. Not in good condition, because played with, but still alive.

A little bit nitpicking before going to sleep: @Raul: one thing is not correct at your NSU TT. The wheels are from the Prinz 4.

I couldn´t have explained it better - exactly the way I thought and the same way I act today.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of car this is or where I could find more information about it. It is from the 1980’s and I gather from eBay that it is referred to as a “Tonka Friction Car”. It is the kind that you run along the ground to rev up an "inertia motor" inside and then push the button on top and it goes forward under it’s own power. It has "140" stamped on the bottom, and is about 3 inches long. I have had no luck searching the internet to find out what it is and possibly obtain one in better condition. Also, if anyone can tell me if it is based on a real car and if so what make or model, I'd appreciate any help.

Yes I agree.

Quite ironic that a European member is telling this to an American member though

On the 1959 Buick forums, someone posted the mother of all promotional model collections. I created a short(!) index of the American cars I could identify, but there are also European and motorsport examples.

Here is long and short of it, well more of the "long" part anyway.
Note: somewhere around photo#55 the url and the photo #'s do not match, so I use the photo #'s exclusively. Viewers may have to click forward or back (by clicking the photo to see the next, or clicking the "previous" link) a couple of times to see the desired image.

To find the promotional model of your favorite kind of car, use your browser's "search this page" or "find on this page" function.

Thanks for the link. Yes, I've heard about that Norev-model, which was released this year. The blue colour seems to be new, the first Norev-K 70 were gold-yellow.

Am I right, that Norev is nowadays just a kind of "badge-engineering"? That the models were made in Asia, just by using the old name, similar to Schuco?

The actual Norev-toys are different than that ones, I know from my childhood in the 70ies. And today they are offering other models than in the past (even the material is different). For example: Norev hadn't made a K 70 in the 70ies.

Well Ingo that goes without saying, it is obvious that brands improve their scale model cars, if they were getting done like two decades ago nobody would buy them and they'd be considered unsafe

Naah, that's not really true. Just today I got the confirmation of the opposite facts.
We'd been in a tool-market and I had a short look to the SIKU-toys besides the cashier, if perhaps some models were still produced, which I know from my childhood.
I've seen one fact, which friends, who have small children, have told me. They said, that SIKU-toys (a well known company since decades of Lüdenscheid) were getting worse in hte last years. They let produce in China and the bottoms of the cars are nowadays plastic and not Zinc any more, so the new SIKU-toys are much easier broken into pieces, when children are playing with.
So this is the reason, because my friends are buying old, used SIKU- (also Majorette- and Matchbox-)cars on flea-markets for their children. They are just better quality.
And last but not least: it's good for the life's quality of a child, if it can play with a K 70-, Granada- Mercedes W115- or Opel GT-toy-car than with a modern one.

No, they still make their own models. They are made in China but they are not just badge-engineering unlike Schuco's Junior Line series which are often rebadged Cararama/Hongwell models.

The actual Norev-toys are different than that ones, I know from my childhood in the 70ies. And today they are offering other models than in the past (even the material is different). For example: Norev hadn't made a K 70 in the 70ies.

Even if for some models they use the old moulds (Peugeot 505 to cite the first one which comes to my mind), they made lots of new models.

Today's scale models are not only toys. Some companies like Siku still make toys, but others make models for collectors. Norev's 1:43 are not toy, but they still produce toys with cars at a smaller scale.

Ah, a propos SIKU-toys!

@walter: this museum would be something for you: http://www.automodelle-hoeing.de/sys-seitenid,13/

That guy has the worldst biggest collection of SIKU-cars and also the biggest collection of Audi-models!

I know the guy since some years, I also had organized some goodies for his collection, so once an original Märklin-paper-box, which includes six original packed, new Märklin-RAK Audi 100 Coupé S.
The second time my friend of Japan has organized a toy-model of the Audi 100 Typ 44-based "Hongqi"-limousine for him.

Thank you. Well, about two years ago, our basement flooded, and we ended up dismantling it so we could reconfigure it. We just haven't gotten around to rebuilding it.
