Subject: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?

Are there too many pointless background vehicles being frequently being added and are there already too many on this site and should something be done about it?
25/01/2007 @ 19:07:04: antp: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
It is a fact, except maybe Sixcyl I think that everybody was agreeing with a question like that.
The question is rather "what is pointless"

Difficult to say what is pointless, we have different tastes.

'Sixcyl' posts every single background car and on other side of scale we have 'Ralph' who only posts car with 2 stars or more even if the movie is old (1960's). Ideal situation would be somewhere between these

Any 1 star vehicle that can't be justified as being part of the movie or is "interesting" enough to be worth noting. For me that means ignoring the kind of cars that are all over the place (depending on the peroid and location of the film), but for now let's just say it depends on what it is, let's not discuss anymore what "interesting" means because frankly I find some people's theories that any car is interesting quite inane.

I can't believe I've spent all this time discussing this and people still don't seem to understand what I'm getting at. I want to us all to reach a solution, either people agree to be more selective when it comes to posting background cars or I agree to drop the whole issue and never make any more comments about it again and quantity wins over quality.

You know, that happens all the time, finding people that do not think like you, or have different tastes, or do things differently, etc.

The following is off-topic, but I think to it just right now:

It is like when chosing the best view of a car for its picture on the site. That's why we set a "rule" (that is not so well respected I think) that when the images are upgraded to better ones, the new one should be taken from the exact same scene and angle, except if there is a really better view.
For example, for some of my pictures that you replaced by better ones (from DVD) for some movies, I think that the picture that you selected is less good than the one that I selected. But I guess that if you replaced it, it is because you thought the opposite :spamafote: (hence that "rule" of keeping same scene/angle, to not have to ask which picture is the best)

Whatever comes out of the discussion, I will still comment a blurry car if I see it

I totally agree that there must be some rules about the background cars.
25/01/2007 @ 20:59:27: wrenchhead: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
I think background cars should be on the site. However, I agree that some limitations are needed. If there is not enough in the picture to allow a reasonable chance of identification I don't think it should be posted.

I see no point whatsoever in posting a picture of part of a fender, or a car that is so blurry or dark that no details can be seen.

Perhaps the best solution is to post everything but have some rules for deleting it after some time. If a partial or blurry picture is not identified in something like six months I would recommend that it be deleted.
25/01/2007 @ 21:05:25: antp: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
I do not think that the "identifiable or not" is a valid criteria: some very visible cars are still not identified, and lots of really blurry/small/far cars are identified just because they are common... So it is nearly the opposite: if identifiable too easily then is it worth mentionning it? (well, don't take it literally)
25/01/2007 @ 21:35:13: wickey: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
it is nicely visible in series pages.

Example - when I was making Knight Rider I listed all 2+ stars vehicles and all interesting background cars. By Interesting I mean either good visible - on whole screen etc. or a foreign / rare one. If I will list really every car, there will be 2000 vehicles in taht site.. So i think my criterias are fine. (Except of the Volvos of course  ) - I just like to see them in the movies.

If all bvackground vehicles will be just those, that were part of the movie/plot/scene, we will have only half amount of the cars on teh site.. Is that what we want?
25/01/2007 @ 21:37:44: G-MANN: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
Don't forget, everyone, that I don't mean ALL background cars are pointless, just that a lot of the ones listed are. Vote yes if you think they are TOO MANY 1 star cars that aren't essential, DON'T vote no if you think I'm against ALL background vehicle being listed, because that's not true.
25/01/2007 @ 21:46:14: ahight: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
I would have voted yes if you were only talking about ones like this:
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_82525-unknown.html
and Construction Equipment:
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_82240-unknown.html

but my vote was no because of background cars like this should be saved:

Agree.
25/01/2007 @ 22:03:43: G-MANN: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
So you don't mind having stuff like this being added?

http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_43121-Buick-1951.html

http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_71754-Renault-Laguna.html

25/01/2007 @ 22:16:42: antp: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
First one: I would not list it
Second one: depends how long it is visible (if characters are talking one minute with the car in background, why not list it)
Third one: I hesitated. It is visible but maybe a little small
25/01/2007 @ 22:23:10: landrover1: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
the construction cars will be not listed anymore, no ona can identify them...only a good idea is list cars that u can see good, i can identify good cars but construction...well
25/01/2007 @ 22:24:33: antp: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
Some are identified. But even more than cars, I think that these special vehicles are interesting only if they are very visible or used.
25/01/2007 @ 22:31:43: G-MANN: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
I agree. I'll definetely list a construction vehicle if it's used, but not one way off in the background.
25/01/2007 @ 22:39:48: G-MANN: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?

And that's just one of the many passing-by background vehicles you can only see out of the rainly rear windshield in that scene. Whenever this kind of thing happens you say "Is all this necessarily? " you occaisionally get a vague response from the contributor and nothing happens. I think things should change.
25/01/2007 @ 22:41:39: ahight: Poll: Too many pointless background vehicles?
the buick..no,
the renault...yes,
the audi..no.

the audi is similar to the truck photo i posted. it takes up not even an inch of the image.

the one thing i notice similar between the audi, the buick, the truck and construction equipment is when the image opens....you have to take a few seconds looking around to find the car..unlike the volvo, which is right there when it opens.

what about?
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_74509-Mercedes-Benz-SL-R107-1980.html
to me..this would be a no.

but even though this is a similar size..this would be a yes:

looking at Breakfast from Tiffany's I'd agree with you on the "out the back window" shots.

that's where i think it would be good to have a place to post cars that should be considered for deleting. it's hard to read everything using the "see all comments"
