Subject: What rental cars you have driven in the past
06/05/2008 @ 21:22:32: ingo: What rental cars you have driven in the past
I got this idea by the taxt-thread and the threads about the own cars or the cars of the parents.

I don't use rental cars by business, so I can remember -mostly- the rental cars I got in my vacations or for other private reasons.

- 1995, after a breakdown with my NSU 1200 C: Opel Corsa A

- 2007, after a breakdown with my Opel Omega: 2007 Toyota Corolla A. It was for free for me as a ADAC-member (similar like AA in GB and AAA in the US). I was surprised about its high fuel consumption and it was stinking as hell. A strong smoker had it in use before.

- 1993 on Corfu/Greece: Suzuki SL 410 (junk in worse condition)
and in the next week a Suzuki Swift (Geo Metro in the US)

- 1993 in Denver/USA: Chrysler Saratoga (lame duck)
Then I made "autodriveaway" across the US. during 20 days I made the journeys:
1.Denver-St.Louis with a Ford Explorer (unbelievable dirty car, a civil car from the railways police).
2.St.Louis-Houston with a Ford Taurus
3.Houston-Sacramento with a Chrysler(Dodge?) Yoager
4.St.Francisco-St.Paul with a Buick (name? It was a 6cyl, 3.0 liter, but not a Park Avenue
5.St.Paul-Philadelphia with a 1985 Pontiac Le Mans (same base like the European Opel Ascona C).

- 2002 Cyprus: VW Polo Classic

- 2003 South Africa: Renault Megane (the most south lost Renault-hubcap in Africa was ours, lost at Cape Agulhas)

- 2006 Easter Island/Chile: a small Daihatsu 4x4, which name I cannot remember. It was not a jeep, more similar to a Renault Megane Scenic, but smaller

- 2008 East Coast of the USA: 2008 Chrysler Town and Country. I said "popemobil" to it ("Urbi et Orbi")
06/05/2008 @ 21:56:39: Neptune: What rental cars you have driven in the past
2003 Ford E-250 15-Passenger Van (Enterprise)

2000 Ford Windstar (Capital Ford of Wilmington)

1997 Ford Crown Victoria (Enterprise)

2001 Buick LeSabre (Schaeffer BMW Center of Wilmington)

1999 Buick LeSabre (Schaeffer BMW Center of Wilmington)

1999 BMW 328i (Schaeffer BMW Center of Wilmington)

1996 Chevrolet Blazer (Enterprise)

That’s all I can remember ...
07/05/2008 @ 00:04:15: taxiguy: What rental cars you have driven in the past
We once rented a base-model Chrysler 300 that had the small 190 HP engine. While it was certaianly no faster than any of our cars, it was slower than you'd expect for a 300... :ohwell:

More recently we rented a full-size 2008 Mercury Sable (formerly the Montego) and I have to say, it was a really nice car. Plus it was VERY fast, at least for our standards. But I suppose lots of cars seem fast when you're used to driving a 1988 Toyota Camry and a 1987 Honda Accord
07/05/2008 @ 11:56:46: antp: What rental cars you have driven in the past
a crappy Toyota Yaris

http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimages/46032/ToyotaYarisderemplacement.jpg

While the door of my Peugeot 206 was replaced.
I did not like that car.
Diving position is too "high" (i.e. the seat is rather high and not very sloped), though that I know that lots of people like that, I dislike that as you have the impression that you drive slower, which makes even more difficult to respect speed limits.
The inside was really too "cheap plastic" (even compared to the 206 is not especially good for that and that usually it does not annoy me at all) and rather noisy.

You had an accident with your Peugeot? i didnt know that, by the way, werent you able to lower the seat? not every car has that option but many do.

On my honeymoon we were given a 2002 Ford Explorer with only a V6, it seemed to be noticeably underpowered for that size of vehicle.

And back in my early days of driving, I must admit to abusing a rental 1992 Buick Skylark. I ran it much harder than I would have if it were my own vehicle. That is a reason I would never choose to buy a former rental car.

No, some jackass broke the window so well that they damaged the door frame. They did not stole much, though (security triangle + umbrella)
That was in Aug.2004

werent you able to lower the seat? not every car has that option but many do.

It is like many cars, it was made like that. Like many SUV, vans, or even passenger cars like the 307, Mercedes A-class, Smart, etc. where the "seating level" is higher.
It is not just the seat, it is the whole car which is like that.
I prefer cars where you are lower, like the 206.

I forgot one car:

Namibia 2006, 4000 km across the country with a 2003 Nissan Navarra. It had the name "Hardbody" on the back. I don't know, if it was coming from South Africa or if it was a direct import from Japan.

Oh, annother one is missing:

New Zealand 1998: two 1986 Honda Civic Shuttle (the first one broke down), used imported from Japan, rented by "Rent-a-wreck" in Auckland.

At this place you could have seen the real slapstick-scene, where my friend (1.90 meter, 155 kilogrammes) and me (1.89 meter, 105 kilogrammes) have tried to enter our first try of a rental car, a 1987 Honda Jazz.
It was not possible, definetely not. We couldn't sit in the car.

A colleague of mine had the chance to drive the whole DaimlerChrysler-range, always for free, because of his new-car-guarantee.
His brand new 30 000 Euro C-Klasse had so many defects, that he had to go (mostly be towed) to the Mercedes-garage sometime three times per month. An unbelivable impudence by Mercedes to bring such a car in traffic.
08/05/2008 @ 21:19:31: ingo: What rental cars you have driven in the past
Every day new experiences. Today I had a rental car again - my Omega had a breakdown.

So I drove for a few hours a 2008 Ford Focus.

No, I didn't liked it.
09/05/2008 @ 14:22:13: Germaneon: What rental cars you have driven in the past
Some rental cars I drove:
1994 Nissan Sentra (Cuba)
1998 Nissan Micra (Mallorca) - 50 HP, I had to turn off the AC while going up hills
1999 Suzuki Vitara (Cuba)
2006 Pontiac G6 GTP (USA)
2007 Pontiac G6 V6 (USA)
I appreciated the Pontiacs so I dedicated a part of my homepage to them: Pontiac G6
11/05/2008 @ 03:28:58: ingo: What rental cars you have driven in the past

Just that, this summer.

I've also driven a Dodge Intrepid around a car park in Florida in 2003, but that doesn't really count.
