As experienced by other European volume car makers, Peugeot's U.S. and Canadian sales faltered and finally became uneconomical, as the Peugeot 505 design aged. Several ideas to turn around sales in the United States, such as including the Peugeot 205 in its lineup, were considered but not pursued. In the early nineties, the newly introduced Peugeot 405 proved uncompetitive with domestic and import models in the same market segment, and sold less than 1,000 units. Total sales fell to 4,261 units in 1990 and 2,240 through July, 1991. This caused the company to cease U.S. and Canada operations after 33 years. There are currently no known plans to return to the American market.

Today I had an US-car-magazine in the post-box, which I had bought a eBay. It's the "Road Test" from November 1970.

For the guys, who are interested to know more about French (or other) import-cars in the USA, the following issue could be recommended. it was the "1971 Import Car Special"-issue.
On the ad for it they have listed:

In the last days I was a bit busy to sort my K 70-literature-collection (I haven't done it since over 15 years, so I really haven't known, what I'm owning).
I'm sure, that I will find more interesting or funny goodies in the old magazines.


P.S. On the second page of the magazine is an ad for the Renault 10 Major: "Man meet road. Road meet man." "ROAD LOVE" :smile:

The Vel Satis just reminds me of a large version of the current generation Megane.

Renault owns Nissan (well, it is rather an alliance), so it is normal to have a Nissan version of that van. Like there are several Renault-based Nissan cars.

For Opel/Vauxhall, I guess that GM and Renault just worked together for these vans.
Like PSA (Peugeot/Citroën) and Fiat worked together for MPVs and other vans.
Or more recently PSA and BMW worked together on engines, which gives a BMW engine in the 207.

Well it was I guess suppose to be a rival to the BMW 5 Series (I watched Jeremy Clarkson's review on it), and I don't think it quite matches up. It's the kind of car I think is like in its own catagory. Now do Opel/Vauxhall ,Nissan, and Renault work together in Europe? I ask because of the Vivaro/Trafic/Primaster X83 chassis vans.

It is one of those which do not sell well :grin: Here lots of people consider it ugly, or at least not good looking (though that IMHO it is not that bad).
Indeed it is a luxury hatchback. Luxury French car does not already sell well, but hatchback in that category does not help. Same for special style.

One of neatest French cars I've seen on my trip is that Renault Vel Satis. It looks kind of like a luxury hatchback kind of car. Thay don't look bad.

I believe PSA could return by aligning themselves further with Mitsubishi. I will expand on that further :wink:

I'm a former owner of a 1986 Peugeot 505 STi. I would definitely like to see Frenchies return to the U.S., at least Pugs. :joce:

Would they sell well enough to make it worth it? Citroen, Renault and Peugeot don't make real prestige cars or sports cars or SUVs (damn them to hell), unlike the German makes, but then Saab and Volvo seem to do well enough in the US. Is that true that a lot of Americans just don't think much of ordinary European cars because they are small and weird-looking to them? The French makes seem to have the most unusual designs.


Citroën and Peugeot both have an SUV in there model line up. Both makes have several MPV's in they're line up. The Citroën C5, C6 and the Peugeot 407, 607 would be competetive cars in the US. They're size would be normal compared to the standards there. From the new C5 there is going to be a Coupé and a Convertible, like the 407, so that would be the sportscars...
