There is two different types, there is A-Traktor and EPA-Traktor. Main differnce is that suspension is allowed on the A-Traktor.
On Epas you could only use cars with frames, thats why so many Volvo Duetts have been converted to tractors (It's hard to find regular Duetts these days).
On A-traktors you must use unibody cars and thats why we can see newer 'tractors' these days.
And BTW I don't know if this applies to both types but one of them must have two gearboxes welded togheter.
And as you said ingo, tow-bar is a must, the Volvo 740 above doesn't have one and therefor it's illegal!

I like the Volvo pickup with wood box ...
cars like that have been popular in Sweden. There was an ancient law, that you could drive cars, converted in a "tractor" (two seats, no suspension at the back axle, a towing-bar - @atom: have I missed something? ) with 16 years, not with 18.
So several cars were diverted to a "tractor" in the meaning of the Swedish law.

The orange VW Jetta should be a transformer in the new upcoming 2009 Transformers 2 movie.

Or I guess you could just drive your yellow PV instead, and save the 242 for a sunny day.

@taxiguy: Snow is no problem in the summer. If it rains you leave it at home or hate life But it not much of a problem if you're going fast on the highway it just blows over.

The custom "convertible" you made does not appear to have a top. What do you do when it rains or snows?

Nice work, looks like a fun project for the summer. Since it's got no roof at all, you could call it a 242 Barchetta.
The C30 looks very ambitious, I wondered why it had a turbo, but no engine for a second. But it does have an engine, just not in the engine bay. It's got the same wheels as the 9-3, are they by the same tuner?
Having spent so much time on Jalopnik.com, I can't help but comment on the 740 'tractor', it looks very well fabricated.

Me and a friend went and bought this 1976 Volvo 242 L:
First mod was to weld a cross in the trunk:
Next was these two gutter on each side of the car:
Then get rid of unnecessary parts:
A little testspin:
Weld in mountingspots for the seatbelts:
Success:
Smothing out the edges with some bondo:
Here it's painted, we had to work late to get it done to the annual cruising in ower hometown:
Putting in the stereo:
Next day on the cruising we saw a Lancia A112 Convertible and two more 240 Convertibles:
One more picture but blurry as hell:
This was early in the summer. This week we decided to paint it and go to the Vallåkra meeting:
On our way (it's ~300 km one way...)
In the evening we tried to warm some burgers on the engine butit didn't work as planed...
At the meeting:
Ferrari, Camaro SS, Mini and a 240 Convertible:
Fordaudi?
Old 240 Ambulance from Germany:
Zastava and Rekord:
Volvo 440 from Soumi:
Volvo 780:
VW T1
Volvo C30:
SAAB 9-3:
Mobilehome:
Volvo PV 444 with Volvo T5:
Duett with xenonlights:
Offroad PV:
PV, 80's custom:
Amazon:
Jetta:
Kadett C Coupé with monster engine:
Granada from DK:
740 tractor:
That's it for this summer (I think)...
