A lot of these cars on this list are scary. Part of the problem is, few people had any sense that any of these vehicles would ever be collectible. I used to have a neighbor who had a 1984 Ford Thunderbird, and while it's not as valuable as the '83, I frequently urged them to preserve it as a collector's item. This was the car that started the huge aerodynamics trend of the 1980's and 1990's in the US.

They didn't listen.

They're not saying there are none on the road, just none that are insured by them, which is an indicator of how many may be left. The ones that are left are most likely being insured as regular cars, not classics, which indicates that they are most likely to be junked instead of restored. Based on e-bay, there are a few GTAs that appear every now and then, more than the Alliance sedans and Encore hatches, which sold in better numbers.

They also have listed the Mazda RX-2 and RX-3 in previous editions, but now they are popping up more and more on E-bay. They don't list the R-100, RX-4, Cosmo, or the piston engined variants 808 and 618. All of these are more rare than the RX-2/3.

There are still Renault GTA on the road, and more than 15 Alliance Cabriolet...

That is sad.

Hagerty is the collector car insurance company I intend to register my rounded-line with after its restoration is finished. I have heard they are a great insurance company to do business with.

My pickup qualifies, but I haven’t a primary vehicle to drive at the moment, nor an enclosure for the pickup. Until I get a garage big enough to house the truck, and another vehicle to drive (with proof of insurance on that vehicle) I can’t register my rounded-line with them.

Hagerty also demands no more towing, hauling, or any sort of off road use. The pickup must be kept in storage.

In the Feb. issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotics, there was a brief blurb about Extinct autos. Apparently, Hagerty Insurance (which specializes in Classic and Specialty car insurance) has a list of cars that they list as extinct or endangered. Here's the list from their website:

Complete Hagerty Threatened, Endangered and Extinct List

Threatened: Hagerty insures fewer than 25

• 1975-1981 Volkswagen Scirocco
• 1971-1974 Mazda RX-2

Endangered: Hagerty insures fewer than 15

• 1981-1985 Chevrolet Citation X-11
• 1963-1966 Studebaker Wagonaire
• 1979-1981 Toyota Supra
• 1974-1981 Volkswagen Dasher
• 1985-1986 Chrysler Laser XE
• 1983-1986 Chrysler Executive Limo
• 1971 Plymouth Cricket
• 1988-1989 Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo
• 1980 Dodge St. Regis
• 1984-1985 Ford EXP Turbo
• 1985-1987 Renault/AMC Alliance Convertible
• 1987-1991 Sterling 825/827
• 1979-1980 Plymouth Fire Arrow
• 1974 Oldsmobile Toronado

Extinct: Hagerty insures no examples

• 1983-1986 Isuzu Impulse
• 1986-1987 Renault/AMC GTA
• 1978-1980 Oldsmobile Starfire Firenza
• 1984 Plymouth Voyager (Dodge Caravan)

They did note that these cars came off the list:

We’re happy to report that we can remove five vehicles from our list: 1971-1974 BMW Bavaria, 1971-1976 Mercury Capri, 1971-1977 Toyota Celica, 1975-1980 Chevrolet Monza and 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT. All can be found in sufficient supply that Hagerty now insures more than 25 examples of each.[url]We’re happy to report that we can remove five vehicles from our list: 1971-1974 BMW Bavaria, 1971-1976 Mercury Capri, 1971-1977 Toyota Celica, 1975-1980 Chevrolet Monza and 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT. They started the original list in 2009, with a follow-up article of the reader's comments, and a third part. So sad!!

The worst part is I can think of more that are missing from their list, a lot of Japanese and European models from the 1960-80s.
