I have researched this information from Wikipedia page and found some discrepancies from the source and my memory and others.

The 1979 source is from the book that was published by the Postal service in 2022 which referenced with 1979 paint scheme: https://about.usps.com/publications/pub100.pdf

But my memory came out wee bit earlier than that. Possibility started in 1976 due to USA's Bicentennial anniversary that may have changed the colour scheme such as this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_revolution_bicentennial.svg

This refuted my memory: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trolley_car_passing_downtown_Pittsburgh_- Kaufmann%27s_store,_1984.jpg with the 1976 version of DJ-5 Dispatcher as shown there.

Also, there https://imcdb.org/vehicle_564060-AM-General-DJ-5-Dispatcher-1977.html and https://imcdb.org/vehicle_759280-AM-General-DJ-5-Dispatcher-1977.html

I have gone through these DJ-5 Dispatcher vehicles at imcdb.org and found some vehicles have old sticking out of body gas cap and newer below the body gas cap insert at the rear
