I don't visit the forum very often - actually this is my first post here - but I came across this article and I've tried to make it more accessible to everyone. So, here it goes:
Site lists 127000 cars that appear in movies
Database gathers pictures of vehicles appearing in movie productions.Brazilian cars are also listed.
The Batmobile, the Scooby Doo Van, the colourful vehicles from "Cars" and Herbie, the "Beetle", are some of the four-wheel stars that became famous in movies and TV.
These cars, ( almost ) everyone knows. But did you know, for instance, that in the beginning of the Brazilian movie "Cidade de Deus" appears an old DKW-Vemag Belcar 1000 wandering around the area of the "favela" ( Brazilian slums )? And that Fernanda Montenegro ( one of the most famous Brazilian actresses ) hitchhikes in a Ford F-4000 truck in "Central do Brasil"?
All this information, with pictures of the scenes where star-cars feature, as well as all the background vehicles - completed with their identification and year - is on IMCDb.
Quiz G1 - Test your knowlegde about cars on films
The site has already registered 930000 movies, also including films made for TV, short-series, animation and documentaries. An amount of 127000 vehicles were found, among them 5000 are unknown and other 3000 not identified. The search system allows finding the name of the car by the film, by its country of origin and by the vehicle's own name.
"We work in a system similar to the one of Wikipedia, with several contributors, including some from Brazil", explains Antoine Potten that administrates the site from his home in Brussels, Belgium. "The difference is that only 47 administrators can add cars and films to the site". Interviewed by G1, Potten says that he wasn't the creator of the site, but he was one of the first to register in 2004, "because I love cars and films where cars take part in the action", and he is nowadays the main administrator of the site.
Among the vehicles' countries of origin, Brazil is in 20th place with 163 ones. These include the featured in "Ônibus 174" ( 2002 ) and one Chevrolet Veraneio featured in "Moonraker" the 007 movie filmed in Rio de Janeiro in 1979. There's also one Brazilian 1987 VW Gol featured in "Batman Returns" ( 1992 ).
Among "blockbusters", there's the white Lincoln limousine where Richard Gere "rescues" Julia Roberts in the final scene of "Pretty Woman" ( 1990 ); the 1949 Buick Roadmaster driven by Dustin Hoffman ( supervised by Tom Cruise ) in "Rain Man" ( 1994 ); the 1912 Renault 35CV from "Titanic" ( 1997 ) and the supercars Toyota Supra Turbo, Mazda RX-7, Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, Honda S2000 and Dodge Stealth from the "The Fast and The Furious 2" ( 2003 ).
To maintain the site, there are 47 administrators who receive information from several contributors. Fans of cars and films can also comment each car or each scene showed.
In spite of the great number of cars listed, IMCDb administrators reckon that "This site will never be complete. There are thousands of films and it's impossible to list them all. We try to include as much information as we can".
