Slightly surprising title - has unfavourable undertones of Yobbo or Chav in current usage - but they were originally Barbars/Berbers - an ancient tribe from N Africa and one of many who attacked Roman Empire. Another similar example of how an original name has become something insulting because they were an enemy of Rome is the Vandals tribes from what is now Poland.


Well, that's not totally correct, it's the second meaning from the Middle Age. The origin is from the Greek:

Hmm, so it seems, that it's not correct, what I've heard about the origin a long time ago: that it came from the Romans, and it was meant for uncivilized blokes, who wears beards (mainly for the German tribes on the other side of the Rhine and the Limes.
