These vehicles still need the technical clearance by the service des Mines to be allowed on French roads, even if approved individually. So I'm not sure the W plate help this way. I see it more like garage owners fond of US vehcles and who do that way so that it's the garage budget that is used when about filling the tank or buying parts, and not their own wallet
