Myspace is junk. I saw his "precious" 1989 Tempo AWD in his videos. He keeps it in pretty good condition, but my car will be at lease 10 times nicer than his.

Being the age he is, he's lucky to have a car at all. Incredibly, the state of Alaska gives driving permits to 14 year-olds.

Well then the "United" States you need to give proof of some driving classes, at lease 30 hours I believe, You need to give your birth certificate to the DMV to prove your age (which you need to be 15 1/2 to get a permit), take a test and if you get 9 or less questions wrong you'll get a permit and then before you get your lisence you need 6 hours of driver's education. At his age I wonder how much his insurance rates are.

I remember asking him how he got to drive at all (he always talked about cruising in his ride), he explained he had a learner's permit, I'm not sure what the conditions of this are (I think driving age varies in different states), but the way he talked it sounded like he drove his Tempo all over the place. Maybe it was just him making it up to sound all grown up, but then the place he lives in is probably such a remote backwater community that the local cops are so complacent they'll let kids like him drive, he once said he came across a couple of cops while out in his Tempo and all they said was "Nice to see youngsters learning to drive" or something. Wouldn't happen in England, I tell you, not even in the West Country.

I'd have to read about the driving laws in Alaska. He could drive more since not many people live up there. Well hopefully he actually IS a good driver.

Technically a 14-year-old could learn how to drive a car, it's not exactly rocket science, but the thing is being in control of a car is a responsibility that I'm not sure most 14-years-old can be trusted with. Some 14-year-olds are still children really, can they be trusted to handle a car without going stupid and driving as if they were in a computer game? 17 year-olds (the driving age in the UK) can be bad enough, what would it be like if 14-year-olds could drive? I know people with learner permits still have to be supervised and all, and Explorer4x4 would be annoyed if he saw me talking like this (he always complained about how he thought adults looked down on teenagers), what I think is that while there are in fact some 14-year-olds that could be trusted, there are also a lot of them that couldn't be. You just have to set a limit, there is nearly always a difference in people between 14 and 16 or 17. Personally I think it's irresponsible of states like Alaska to give learner's permits to 14 and 15 year olds, it means those people will be more likely to drive unsupervised, I still believe some of what Explorer said when he talked about driving, because the place he lives in is so sparsely populated you could easily get away with it if you were him, but what happens when he goes onto the interstate?

When I was 14 I actually drove my grandmother's car in a deserted parking lot. She would let me practice there every once in a while until I got a permit, Then I can only drive with a supervised person 25 and older whether it's an older sibling, parent or guardian. Best to practice with a relative rather than a close friend.

One quick question about the Tempo, I just looked at Explorer4x4's profile page on IGDB, where he says that his Tempo has a 2.3 litre engine that produces 100HP. That's an absolutely pitiful power output for that size of engine! My dad's Vauxhall Omega (which he's kindly letting me borrow at the moment) has 2.5 litre V6 which produces 170BHP, and that's a pretty ordinary European car. Why is it some American cars have big engines yet such low BHP for their size?

Because it is quite less expensive to get 100 HP from a 2.3 than from a 1.3 (e.g. my father's Peugeot 106 Rallye has that 1.3/100 HP engine)
And as in USA they do not pay taxes depending on engine size, and consumption was not a big problem, well... why pay more for the engine?

They are different than where I live except for the age limit and renewing the permit. After getting a permit it expires a year to the day you get it.

I remember reading that the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado had this truly gigantic 500 cubic inch engine, (8.2 litre!) yet only produced about 190BHP. That's so wasteful.

We do have to pay what is a gas guzzler tax which for some cars is an extra few thousand dollars. And on some cars, there are optional engine that has more liters, horsepower and torque, which can cost more.

My Peugeot 206 with its 1.4 75hp engine is in the first category, up to 8 CV (it is 55 kW).
If you take for example a Corvette C6, for the first registration you pay nearly 5000 €, and then 2500 € per year as tax!
The first one is due to the number of kW/hp, as for example a 2-liter 247hp Lotus Exige Cup 240 pays the same; but the second one is due to the engine size only if I am correct, as then the Lotus only pays 270 € per year.
Lots of old (and less old) US cars with big engine used LPG, as the annual tax was then divided by 10.
