Hmmm, are you sure, that htey were original German plates and not only one US-made fake on the front on a car, coming from an US-state, where a front plate is not required? It's very unlikely, that it's an original German car, because the Ford Freestyle never existed here.
Otherwise: maybe it was a car from a Bundeswehr-soldier, stationated on the Luftwaffe-base in Alamogordo/NM. But I'm not sure about the plates for their private cars. The military plates are unique, made as the regular http://kennzeichen.pj-web.de/kenzdeu/img/bundeswehr.jpg but with only four ciphers.

I'm no plate expert so it certainly may have been fake. It looked like the current style plate--flag of Europe + D on the left--and it was on the rear of the car; there was no front plate.
I like your air base theory. Or perhaps there was a US plate or temporary tag hidden behind the dark tinted rear glass (it was nighttime) and the joker just decided to slap a German-looking plate on for fun!

@Antoine: why haven't you said anything before? I've been there, too last weekend. Not directly in Berlin, but nearby in Bernau. My wife's little niece had their enrolment
But no special car-sights. Only one Wartburg 1.3 with a 1991-plate from BER (Bernau). And on the way to Berlin, at the very early Saturday morning we've seen two heavily crashed cars - both with Belgian plates.

I mentioned that in the admin section but indeed you are not admin...
Anyway as we only had two days in the city (and we were in the centre of Berlin) I do not think it would have been easy to find time to meet...

And I don't want to be one.
This morning, when I got the ordered Vectra- and radio- instruction manuals at the Opel-dealer in the next village, I remembered, that I wanted to make pics from the 1980ies Buick, standing on hte roof of a pub/grill restaurant there, but I forgot my camera.
So here only pics from their homepage: http://daytona-roadhouse.de/aktuelles/ Their second car, the "Daytona Police"-car, isn't original, or?

I saw a Citroen Xsara Picasso the other day. There is nothing unusual or interesting about that but it was the plate that was. It was Green with red lettering and was something like 401 K 4448. Any idea where it was from? The car didn't have any stickers identifying the country.

@Sandie: That sounds like a French diplomatic plate.

Wonder what it was doing here.

I saw an Ariel Atom today. Having been warned before I ran home to get my camera but by the time I got back it was gone.

Today, I saw a Ford TW-30 tractor - airbrushed with images from sci-fi horror movie 'Alien'! It has featured in Classic Tractor magazine, and appeared at shows.

I saw a black Audi A1 on Thursday when I was driving to work. It was on the Roosevelt bridge heading into DC. It was night, but I became curious when I saw the silver roof rails and the unfamiliar taillights. I was able to get close enough to confirm it was an A1.
The A1 is not sold in the US, but this car had a Michigan manufacturer's license plate. Volkswagen of America's headquarters is located not far away in Herndon, Virginia, so that might be related.
