Replacing pictures
Published 04/06/2009 @ 14:32:21, By G-MANN
I regularly rent DVDs from LOVEFILM (£15 a month, I get sent 3 at a time, and I can receive as many I as I can watch and post back) and often I check the entries on this site to see if there's any vehicles missed or if pictures could do with being replaced by higher quality DVD captures. Most of contributors on this site don't seem to get their captures from DVD, instead they seem to be from, shall we say, "less legitimate sources" (nothing wrong with that because everyone's doing it nowadays  ) The images are usually reasonable, but DVD is always a bit better.

The question is, do people think it's worth me often replacing captures with DVD ones? I don't mind it doing it, if there aren't too vehicles in a film it doesn't take too long, I admit there's times where I haven't got time to do it or I simply can't be bothered, so I just send the DVD back without taking captures from it. But does anyone feel I'm trying to "put my stamp on things" all the time? Some people have their own way of doing their pages, which is fine (for example I post the a title screen capture in the comments which is shrunken to 160 pixels high, I think it look better than a thumbnail, and perhaps don't want to be always clicking on imageshack thumbnail links). I'll try not to undo anyone's hard work, but sometimes I think it's worth replacing their thumbnails with better ones. And I never delete someone's name from the contributor section.

The last DVD I watched was Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Atom did that film a few months, I don't think there's any vehicles to add but DVD captures might look a bit bette, his are about 640 x 300 mine will be roughly 720x405 (that's what they before I crop away black letterbox borders, although not films have these as much as others). I think film pages should have the best quality images possible, but it's not the end of the world if many have captures from downloads (which rarely seem to be 720x405). Anyway if it's OK I plan to replace the captures this evening, so can people give me some feedback this afternoon (according to British time)? (Personally I always like to hear from antp the most, since he runs this site)

Yes, ofc you can replace the pictures with better ones!
If you like you can put your new thumbs in my old comments. I have seen that some users only replace the mainpicture and that's ok too.

And by the way: I think that the non-DVD pictures on the site is temporary and should be replaced but that's not always possible.

Here is my point of view on this (as G-MANN wanted it :D)

Of course it is always good to have better pictures.

But I think it is more important to list movies without pictures before replacing existing pictures by better ones.
So if you want to watch the movie anyway, why not replace captures. But if you watch it just for that it is probably not very useful. When pictures are 640-wide they are often already rather good (sometimes I do not even bother replacing them even if I could).
Of course if the movie has bad quality picture it is worth "upgrading" them.

And it is also important to not delete the background ones that you do not like

Sometimes the difference in quality is hard to notice.
Recently I watched http://www.imcdb.org/movie_814022-Bangkok-Dangerous.html
There were already pictures so at first I thought I would not do captures, but the ones on the site were really not very good (and less than 640 pixels wide I think). Those that I uploaded were not from a DVD but I doubt that pictures from a DVD would make much difference in this case (colors may be a little more bright, but the current pictures are already rather good for sharpness & size I think).

And now with HD movies, any DVD pictures could be replaced by better ones anyway...

As long as the improvement is noticeable there's of course no problem on replacing pictures, specially when that means making them bigger, but in cases like the one Antoine shows of Bangkok Dangerous i wouldn't bother replacing the captures, perhaps it could be upagraded but replacing captures of that good quality is losing the time a bit!

Thanks atom! :sol:

And antp, yes I usually rent the DVDs I'm interested in watching, taking captures for the site is not my main priority when I put films on my rental list (although occaissionally I'll rent a film I've seen before because it hasn't been covered by this site properly, like The Player), it's just that I tend to watch recent films more than than older ones (but I'm open to films of all eras and genres) and the popular films are often done first by people who download them before the DVD is available. With a film like Bangkok Dangerous I probably wouldn't bother myself, sometimes I've seen pages with images that are already very good so I haven't bothered.

A 2nd opinion on some pictures is not bad I think.
