Yes, they disappeared because of safety reasons of course. Not so nice when they're going through a pedestrian.
I thought I'd put them here to help with identification, but it's a fairly random collection... Should be many more.

They are still legal in the US, it's just the silly European-only regulation that make them illegal.

Here to, but not on new cars. If it is an old car, it is allowed. by old, i think the law came in in the 90's. I know the 70's Valiant Charger had one...

Well these can still be quite dangerous when a car hits a pedestrian
I am happy that the Mercedes which hit me did not had a fixed hard ornament (C126, if I remember well)
