Site improvement / ideas?

I was wondering. Wouldn't it be convenient to have a 'racer' category for motorcycles? I think that the 'sporter' one is far too messy, including any road bikes with fairings or aggressive presentation, and in which the real race motorbikes are drowned.

I do not know much about bikes, so I can do any change needed

Do I just have to make a new category, or is there also already a list of known makes & models to mass-update?
Also, is it useful to have a separate category? Or should rather the sportster category be renamed, and some bikes moved to road category?

(I'd like to see other people give their opinion.)

The problems are:

— I don't understand what 'sporter' means;

— but if I understand it correctly—by seeing the use made of this category—this class is a hotch-potch in which are mixed at least two categories, the bikes being sold to look aggressive, fast, mean, etc. (with double inheritance, grands prix and Mad Max), and the bikes that were made for racing;

— to me the first class mixed-in, the 'aggressive looking' one, should be in 'road' but obviously it is not (that is the origin of my miscomprehension of the thing);

— those two-in-a-bag are very different, though, at least on one criterium which is used to separate other vehicles: one is street legal (whatever the ad-men make believe), the other is not.

So, I do think we should separate.

It can been reached by making 'sporter' reserved to racing motorbikes (but, as I'm not sure to understand the first reason which has lead to the creation of this category, maybe someone will remind this reason to me and shows me that I'm wrong to expell the 'aggressive kind' from 'sporter').

Or by creating 'racer', which should be clear enough a name not to make confusion anymore, while up-loading and ranking the vehicles.

I would add this: there is a third solution, my favourite, a) expelling the 'aggressive looking' in 'road' and b) creating 'racer', third solution which has the enormous advantage—for me—to make disappear this ambiguous 'sporter' class which classes nothing but confuses everyone—at least, my poor self.

Side note: there are, as far as I can judge without pointing and counting individuals, much more 'aggressive looking' than real 'racers' in this 'sporter' class. So the separation should be easy, whichever way to separate is chosen.

I agree with this.

And the question now: which ones do we keep in the new "racer" category?
- None in a first time, put all in "road" then we change case by case those from the merged "road" category?
- Or we move manually the non-race ones from the renamed sporter->racer?
- Or I create a 3rd new category, "racer", and we move those from "sporter" to either "road" or "racer" before finally deleting "racer"

The third solution would be the best, in my opinon (moyennant quelques corrections de ton propos) :

1 — we create "racer" ;

2 — a dedicated soul transfers manually the 40 or 50 bikes belonging to this class from "sporter" to "racer" ;

3 — what is left in "sporter" is industrially moved to "road" ;

4 — we DESTROY the "sporter" hideous name and class.

Since I'm more in a mood/mode lurking on IMCDb than watching movies, this week, I could be the poor soul doing the discrimination job (OK, since I'm the one who asked for it, too).

It would take me about two hours. Or two days. Certainly not more.

For a short while, some of the pages would be adorned with a question thrown to the intelligence of all of my fellow IMCDbers, du style "'road' or 'racer'?"—because there are some guys who would be very helpful there, the French jplemoine or Brotherjack, unfortunately not always present, and nzcarnerd too (and probably some others who would reveal themselves in this opportunity). And their opinion would be very welcome. But the ambiguous cases are very few, methink.

Once the election of all the 'racers' done, I'll tell you to begin the mass deportation of the remaining 'sporters' to 'road'.

Ça irait, comme ça ?

Done.
I actually changed the category name to keep the same ID (53) for racing, made a new one (59) for the old "sportster" (that then appears at the end of the bikes categories) and moved all existing there, so they can be either moved back to 53/Racing or to Road category. When it will be empty, I'll remove that new category.
There are a little more than 1000 entries there.

All right, the new "racing" category has 157 items, with 25% (only!) "unknown".

You can take the "sporter (old)"—from which I withdrew also a few "misc." and a fair number of "trail bikes"—in its whole and make it "road".

I took a look at the "Misc." class. Quel débarras c'est, cette catégorie ! I expelled more than one fourth of the items, which could easily be classed 'road', 'trail bike' or one of the few other classes.

Already done? Good work :smile:
I'll remove that old category this evening then.
The "misc" category is somewhat a "unknown bike category" :grin:

I've been thinking - how about a custom page for users where we could create our own pages that would not normally be allowed on IMCDb (like YouTube videos, home videos, etc.) where only the user could see them, not searchable or visible by any other users except by page link? I think it would be kind of fun identifying cars in various videos like that.

Just an idea.

You can put some things on your profile page, but i won't provide a whole structure for making alternative imcdb-like sites, that would be too much to manage.

I've hatched another idea - how about a downloadable program/app for the purpose of what I described in my last post? Then you wouldn't have to manage anything.

Someone would still have to make that. I already don't have time to work on the next version of IMCDb itself...

I have bin starting having some really big issues uploading pictures to the site when I want to add a new vehicle to the site or post pictures in comments because suddenly the site has refused accepting the same pictures it was willing to accept only a few days earlier because it is not a JPEG file this is not such a problem because I can easily convert the pictures on my computer to JPEG files but the major problem is that the site has also become weary picky about the size of the picture file and it it's not bigger then 73 kg it won't be accepted even if I have not had the problem before when I have posted way bigger pictures on the site can someone please tell me what the problem is

It depends on how tall they are but 73 kg is not so heavy.
