Questions about country of origin
Published 19/02/2024 @ 22:59:04, By atom
This thread is mainly for special versions of US cars made in 1949-1959.

In a recent post I identified two Australian built Fords. I had a look how others where listed and some had Australia as origin, some as US origin built in Australia and a few as Canadian origin built in Australia. Question was raised if they shouldn't be listed as US-origin built in Australia.

Since this was the 1958-1959 models that used Australian stamped bodies that looks like the 1955-1956 Ford/Meteor body, with an Australian made V8 (I'm not sure about the frame but it must be locally sourced as well as that frame wasn't made in the US or Canada anymore). I thought it made the most sense to list it as Australian origin.
Something that weight in also was that our Canadian built Meteors and Monarches are all listed as Canadian origin and I thought this was a similar story?

From what I've read on Wikipedia; Ford Australia got their CKD-kits from Ford Canada and that would make the most sense since they are both Commonwealth countries.
The question is how should they be listed?
I'd agree that it really should be 'US-origin built in Australia' but then shouldn't the Canadian built vehicles be changed to 'US-origin build in Canada'?
The problem with this is that we will loose a step this way. Canadian sourced vehicles built as CKD-kits abroad would be loosing some of it's provenance, maybe it's just splitting hairs but I think it's an important part of each countrys car production history.

If the Canadian vehicles should keep Canada as origin shouldn't the Australian Fords be listed as 'Origin Canada built in Australia' rather than 'US-origin built in Australia'?

This is a rabbit hole for sure as we have similar stories with some MoPars and Pontiacs with Chevy frames listed as Canadian origin. Not to mention Kaiser and Ford Falcon in Argentina. Coach built vehicles like motor homes and buses.

I think that I'd like to narrow this thread to the Fords for now...

One solution could be a tree in the built in section but I'd guess that would be hard to maintain and could easily be abused by unaccustomed users.

Am I overthinking this? Some input is appriciated.

I'm not sure that the fact that the CKD kit was made in Canada is so important here.
There is a limit to the amount of details we can input anway.

Interesting info, but I still disagree with listing it as Australian origin. The car wasn't designed in Australia at all. If you look at the "Australian" Toyota Avalon 2003 facelift, for example, the model origin is still listed as USA even though the facelift was done in Australia. Similarly the Ford Escape Taiwan facelifts (of 2006/08) are still listed as US origin.

This lead me into my two-cent worth of my thought. There are several vehicles that has diverged from the original such as Australian Ford Falcon, Argentinean Ford Falcon, Brazil Volkswagen Kombi, and so on. There are point where they diverge to their own production instead of CKD.

From what I understand that the 1967 Ford full size mould were shipped to Brazil so they make their own full size Ford there. Do we list as Origin: USA and Made in Brazil or Origin of Brazil?
