Adding a "Mark" field?
Published 23/02/2006 @ 00:26:43, By antp
Due to the number of vehicle with an unofficial "Mk" or "Mark" info in their model name, I think that we could maybe put that in an extra field.
This would solve the problem that the "mk" is not part of the model name, and is not an internal manufacturer code.
But then we have to decide how to specify this code: either by a simple number, formatted by the site itself depending on the make (e.g. on a Renault it will be a simple number, on a Jaguar it will be a "Mk." folled by a roman number).
This causes a major problem: what about the Spitfire that uses Mk1 to Mk3, and then MkIV...
So the other possibility is to have this field as a text, like the model & code fields.

I precise that we can even make some special handling for the Spitfire case (i.e. roman numbers if mk>3 in that case)
So I would say that the auto-formatting system is the best one because then we do not have to check which Mk-style use the other cars of the same model.

So until now the idea seems to be OK for most of you...
Before doing that we should make a list of the Mk style of each make/model.
Remember that we can adapt it for a precise model.
And also that this is for the "unofficial" "Mk" number. Some of the following list may have the "mk"/"mark" in their real commercial name, so they are not concerned (I think about Jaguar and Lincoln for example).
Renault: A simple number? Or roman number?
VW: Simple number
Ford: "Mk." + roman number ? or normal number ? or it depends on the models ?
Triumph Spitfire: "Mk" + number, or roman if > 3
other Triumph: various styles currently... which one is correct?
Honda: hidden in model name, displayed like an extra info with number + "series" ?
Jaguar XJ: for the moment we use the Chassis code, I think it is better
Jaguar E-Type: "Series" + roman number ?
other Jaguar & Bentley: "Mk." + roman number, but then we do not have any model name
Opel: Letter (A, B, C, ...)
Lincoln Continantal: really part of the commercial model name, or simply "Mark" + number ?
Austin & Austin Healey: "Mk." + roman
Rover: "Mk" + roman
Vauxhall & Austin Healey: "Mk." + roman
By default and for those with only few models concerned... "Mk." + roman ?
List of "Mk": http://www.imcdb.org/search.php?resultsStyle=asList&makeMatch=2&make=&modelMatch=- 0&model=mk&modelInclModel=on&modelInclExtra=on

About that movie, except the bike I do not seen what I forgot
I (and most of the other admins I think) check often latest added comments on the site.
But that's not really (not at all actually) the subject of this thread... So please keep this thread for discussion about addition of a field (mostly discussion with other admins)

mki in movies and TV series
A search for "mki" in model field brings up only one page (all Rovers!), which includes "mkii" & "mkiii"; is that right?

The mark is currently not included in searches (not very useful, I think).
Only Rover are displayed because I did not move the "Mk" of these vehicle to the new mark field, since I was not sure how the full model name should be written (since the "Mk" is in the middle of the name :/)

Antoine, I saw you renamed some of the makes didn't mentioned earlier (Citroën XM and Peugeot 106). Is it the purpose to classify all those in the mark fields aswell?

How about Cadillac automobiles? They were first identified by "Model" (A, B, C, D, "30", etc.), then by "Type" (51, 53, 55, V-63), then by a "Series" number (314, 353, 370A), then by a series name ("Calais", "DeVille", "Fleetwood"), not to mention individual models like the "Seville", "Cimarron", "Allante". In 1930-31, on the V-16 chassis alone, there were about 70 different "Job/Style" numbers by Fleetwood and 11 by Fisher. You cannot PROPERLY identify a Cadillac of that period without indicating the "Series" and the "Job/Style" number. For example, a Cadillac "452D/5775FL" clearly identifies a 1934 formal limousine style on the sixteen-cylinder chassis. Of course you could leave it at "1934 Cadillac limousine", but that description would be far from complete. Which brings us to commercial vehicles and conversions on Cadillac chassis. "Cadillac ambulance", "Cadillac Flower car", "Cadillac funeral coach", "Cadillac Mirage Pick-up", "Cadillac Station Wagon" do not do justice to the reputable coach builders who fashioned the body. For example, you wouldn't identify a custom Delage, Delahaye or Hispano Suiza without adding the coach-builder (e.g. "Figoni & Falaschi", "Letourner & Marchand", "Fernandez & Darrin", etc. Sorry to complicate your life !

You did not login on the forum I guess (it is separated from the site).
For Cadillac, it seems quite complicated. It is more than just "Mk" followed by a number
About custom cars, for the moment we put the coach builder as extra info, as I said somewhere else this is another problem and we will have to think about it.

Why is the factory given letters of the Opels moved into this field? It´s a kind of chassis code and is better treated like that. There are some generations of Rekord before the A with other codes, for example.
And this field comes between the modelfield and the extra info connected to the modelfield so it splits up the full modelname, like Rekord A L or Kadett A L.

I thought it was better for Opel since these letters were a little like Mks... (since for Vauxhalls the letters are replaced by Mks).
I can put the letters back to chassis code if it is better.
For the name order, I could make this depend on the make.

I think it would be better to put them back there, even if they are somewhat like the Mk:s, especially since we have the earlier P and P2 models that won´t fit in the Mk system.
As for the name order I think it would be better if the Mk field was sorted beneath the make and model field if possible. Maybe even the chassisfield could be sorted there. To keep the official name clean from workshop designations and selfmade numbers.
Like this:
1964 Opel Rekord L
[A]
1968 Mercedes-Benz 200
[W115]
1975 Ford Capri II
Mk2
1975 Volkswagen Golf L
[Typ 17] 1
Some models have the Mk in the name, and in those cases it shold be in the modelfield or extra info, since it´s the official designation.
Like the Triumph 2000 Mk2, but the 2000 Mk1 isn´t badged that way and I think it ws dropped again on the later 2000 TC model. It was still a Mk2 though, of course, even if the label came off.
The european Fords are also problematic since they are produced in both britain and germany. It´s ok for the british cars to have a Mk number, but for other markets it feels more strange since they are rarely (I think) referred to in that way outside the UK. Maybe it´s better to use a simple number like the VW for them?
