If you had to have a European car (including British makes) what would you have? For the sake of argument let's set a limit of £50,000 ($100,000) so you can't have all the obvious dream supercars.

Which one do you mean? The LTD Crown Victoria or the mid-sized one sold in the mid-80s?

A Ford that is more than 20 years old :ddr555:
Here in Europe there aren't so big sedan in Ford range. As the space is a luxury in cities, the largest sedan are high luxury cars, like BMW's 7 series, Audi A8, Mercedes S-Class, etc.

Edit : G-MANN was meaning in current production I think, not in old cars. There never were such big cars here.

He can have old cars if he wants. The closest thing we had to that was the Ford Granada, it was the largest car Ford made for the European market but still nowhere near as big as the LTD. It was replaced by the bug-eyed Scorpio (during the 80s it was still called the Granada in the UK when Europe called it the Scorpio). It's main competitors were the Vauxhall/Opel Carlton/Senator/Omega and the Rover SD1/800. There was also the Ford Capri, a coupe with a fairly long bonnet.

Mk II Granada

Mk III Granada (now called the Scorpio in Europe)

The infamous Ford Scorpio

But today Ford and Vauxhall/Opel don't make large "executive" cars anymore, they couldn't compete with the Mercs, BMWs and Audis and Rover has gone bust. The last middle-league executive car left was the Omega, but now that has gone and been replaced by the weird Signum (a sort of stretched Vectra). The French companies have returned to the Executive Car market (a car that is bigger and more prestigious than a family car like the Mondeo but not as big or prestigious as a full-size luxury car like the Merc S-Class) with the Peugeot 607, Citroen C6 and the Renault Vel Satis. There is also the Jaguar S-Type, Volvo S80, Alfa Romeo 166, Skoda Superb and the Saab 9-5, though the Big 3 in this market area are the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6.

Fine, a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria would do.

Like I said there is no equivalent of that car sold by Ford Europe, the largest European Ford sold today is the Mondeo, of which the top of the range model is the ST220. You wouldn't fancy a Jaguar XJ8 or something in that range?

You wouldn't broaden your horizons with any other European car like a Mercedes or BMW or Alfa Romeo? What TVRs, they make proper muscle cars at relatively low prices (that they are demanding cars) or what about the Lotus Elise?

American cars are getting smaller (with the exception of the damn SUVs). I don't think there is a car today with the size and weight of the big american cars of the 50's and 60's. The 1966 Plymouth that I am restoring is about 2 feet longer and 700 lb heaver than my Volvo or Saab and it was considered a mid-size car. I don't think I could even get a 59 caddy or chrysler 300c in my garage.

Well.. Not a fan of Mercedes, TVR or Alfa Romeo. I guess if I were to get a European brand car, it would be a BMW M5.

But the American cars of the 50s and 60s were just enormous, many of them looked spectacular, but they were also quite ungainly. Whereas with European cars they used be quite flimsy and small but now they are getting bigger and chunkier. Look at how the BMW 3-Series has grown from the E30 in the 80s. Look inside an old Austin or Ford (British models) from the 40s and 50s and they are so small inside compared to the amount of space inside cars made today.

And that's a far more advanced car than anything Ford has come up with recently (except the GT).

But advancement does not matter to me, at all. And as for old cars, I have never seen a decent car from anywhere but America up until about 1970.

Well there were still brilliant old Ferraris, Mercedes, Jaguars and of course Rolls-Royces, but I'll admit most ordinary European cars of the post-war period didn't compare to the glamour of American cars, but then America was doing a lot better after WWII than we were.

Yea, I meant normal cars. However, if it were American Muscle vs. Italian Exotic, I would take muscle. Even if they aren't as good. But that is just my personal taste.

On the other hand, as you said it was post-war. It is normal that in countries being rebuilt that you find small economic cars rather than large cars like those that the US had :ohwell:
