OMG is older than hashtag: 2007 (I thought it was much newer) OMG: First used in a 1917 letter to Winston Churchill (I thought it only existed since the late 90s) so I'd say your argument is invalid.

Nah, it's valid. The people I know who say hashtag also have OMG in their everyday vocabulary. It's a very hipster-like / valley-girlish thing to say.

"hashtag" is the word that goes with the "#"; the symbol itself is just the hash character (number sign):

Worse thing is that in French we commonly use the sharp/dièse word for the hash symbol (as here "#" is not used for "number", we use "n°" instead), so they officially translated "hashtag" to "mot-dièse"...

With one dash more it's a symbol of the http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinken_(Geheimzeichen) , used in this language http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotwelsch - I've drawn it with chalk besides my house's door - it means "violent property owner"
