I would own the streets of Brussels on my bike lol. While getting lost because I don't speak French.

Brussels is not only French, only by half. The other half is Dutch.
But due the many EU- and NATO-offices there it's in fact a quite international town, so you will not have problems, when you are only speak English.

But it's absolutely not recommended to go by bike to Brussels. By bicycle or car neither. The traffic-behaviour of the local people is terrible (of the foreign diplomats neither), plus extreme busy and narrow streets (often in bad condition), no parking spaces at all and if you find one, it's f*cking expensive.
If you want to enjoy this nice town with a plenty of sights, go there by train and then walk on foot all around (but well, not everywhere, there are some really rough areas, which you should avoid to visit).

@antp, @chicomarx: these topics aren't prejudices All facts, you can read in every tourist guide and sometimes in news magazines, plus a few own made experiences and a lot of experiences, my uncle had made in the last 20 years. So long he works as a well paid Eurocrat in the EU-commission. He always take the train to the office (he lives in Lasne, a small village nearby the Flemish/Wallonian border).
And he gave me the tip, to drive on the narrow Belgian country roads always in the middle, if there's no oncoming traffic. Because the locals are always try to overtake you, even before curves or hills and even if you are already driving faster than allowed. He's right, I've indeed made that experience by myself.

Well it is more complicated than tat:
There are about 90% of French-speaker residents, and 10% Dutch.
Among these, a small part is actually not any of these two, but English or other non-official language, partially due to the large amount of people working for the EU.
In the day, you find a lot of people speaking Dutch because many living in the suburban area come working in Brussels (but also lot of French-speaking people live outside and come work in the city), hence traffic problems.

I do not find that driving in the city is especially difficult Parking either (when you know where to park, at least in evening - in the day indeed parking in the centre is too expensive).
Local do not drive fast: it is tourists who drive slowly!
Lasne is one of the most expensive areas of the country. I guess the guy has a big SUV; if he was driving a small city car he would have less problems in the small streets

But to go in the city centre in the day, it is indeed useless in car: too crowded, and the city is not that big. Most of the things to visit in the centre can be done by foot, and using the metro to reach what is a little further from the centre.

No, my uncle has a Mercedes C-Klasse Estate. I don't know, what car my aunt drive now, the last was a Mitsubishi Colt IIRC. Before that they had two Lancer.

P.S.He's very mad, that the locals are absolutely unable to drive anticipatory. When a junction is full, everyone goes in further. Noone thinks about, how the others -and at least theirselves- can leave the place again.

The Belgian behaviour on the motorways is bad, too. Passing on the right, forcing back the others for entering the exit before then, crossing the white stripes, and so on...

No, Belgian drivers don't have a good reputation. Not in Germany and absolutely not in the Netherlands. No idea about France, but probably not good either.

Older people still have in mind "Waah, a Belgian! They got their drivers license in the newspaper store, when it became mandatory! Before that they don't had one at all!"

Well, German drivers have a reputation of being good drivers And indeed driving on German highways is much nicer. So if you compare to good ones, it is normal that others seem bad
It makes me laugh when people say "driving fast is not dangerous: in German they do not have speed limits, and they have less accidents!"... yes, but they drive better too, that must also be a reason for less accidents. I find less dangerous driving at 170 on a German highway than 120 on a busy highway here.
Here it is French people who often have bad reputation for driving; I do not know if they are really worse than Belgians though.
Anyway, drivers in big cities are always more aggressive than drivers from smaller towns.

Yes, it's not stressful to drive fast on an empty Autobahn. It can be dangerous, when you get tired by the monotony. As for example our next Autobahn, the A31 (from Oberhausen to Emden). On weekends, especially in the early morning, you are nearly alone. And it goes always straight on, no curves, no hills.

It depends also, where you are used to drive. For me driving the Autobahn is an absolute daily thing. When I think about my average kilometers, I can say it's nearly 90% Autobahn, ca.5% country roads and 5% inside town/villages.
This is caused by the fact, that over here, in and around the Ruhr Area, the Autobahn-net is very close-meshed. The most people here have no idea, how to come to the other Ruhr-towns without using any Autobahn.

The German plate-system is very good for having prejudices (any their nearly daily confirmation) You see immediately, who is from a town or the countryside. And the variety of prejudices is extremely large...

So I hate to drive in Düsseldorf. Aggressive, arrogant drivers, crowded traffic, idiotic marked-out roads, no parking space -nothing for free, everywhre expensive- just terrible. I pity my wife, who has to drive there every day to work. For those reason she never started to like that town. Just going working and then back immediately, for 17 years now.

And I feel pissed, when I have to drive on curvy country roads in mountain areas. This sucks!

Probably, yes, but they are further from Germany so the German drives do not meet them as often as Belgians
